Board adopts 2024-25 Calendar B with committee to advise placement of extra professional day

The Platteville School District board voted to adopt the 2024-25 calendar option B, which places the contested professional development day before the start of the school year on Aug. 30, 2024, and approved a contingency that an active committee representing every building be formed to provide democratic input on calendar development.
A staff presentation outlined two options: Calendar A places the additional professional day at the end of the school year; Calendar B places it at the beginning. Board members debated whether the extra day should be scheduled before school starts or after school ends, how that interacts with the district's 186 contracted teacher days and how PLC (professional learning community) time is counted.
"I would move for B with the contingency that we get an active committee together with a democratic process of input so that there's representation from every building to build the calendar," one committee member said. Another member argued an August professional day would likely be more productive: "I would think that's probably the most productive day to put that in the calendar."
Board members discussed the district's history of moving from a 189-day contract to 186 days with extended Wednesday hours and whether the current handbook language clearly accounts for the change. The staff member confirmed the handbook shows Wednesdays as longer days and said the proposed calendars fit the 186-day contracted total.
The motion to approve Calendar B (08/30/2024) with the committee contingency passed by voice vote.
