Superintendent shortens elementary days for two days as heat wave approaches

Superintendent Matt told the Beacon City School District board on June 17 that the district will shorten the elementary school day on Thursday and Friday because a historic heat wave is expected to affect the area.

"We did, make the decision today ... to do a shorter school day on Thursday and Friday for the elementary students," the superintendent said, explaining the change is intended to preserve instructional time while avoiding the hottest afternoon hours. He said the district made the operational decision in response to forecasted high heat levels.

Matt also noted the broader context: the transcript records that a state "heat index bill" has passed both houses of the state legislature but had not yet been signed by the governor. "It hasn't been signed by the governor yet, but it passed both houses," he said. The superintendent emphasized that the local schedule decision was based on immediate forecast conditions rather than waiting on enactment of the state measure.

Board members voiced appreciation for the decision and the district's efforts to protect students during extreme heat; the meeting then proceeded to other agenda items. The board did not take formal policy action at the meeting beyond announcing the schedule change.
