Meridian School District reviews summer facilities work, high-school drain-field project completed under budget

CJ Yeager, Presenter for the Meridian School District, told the board that custodial and maintenance teams completed deep-cleaning and repair work across campuses during a compressed summer window. "We take all of the light fixtures down and clean them," Yeager said, describing top-to-bottom cleaning and carpet shampooing at the elementary campus and noting that 19 water fixtures were replaced using an OSPI grant.
Those 19 fixtures were retested by the health department two weeks after replacement and the district is “waiting on the results,” Yeager said, noting the district will reopen faucets for staff and students if lead tests below five parts per billion. Yeager also described a moisture investigation at the elementary that identified improper construction and said the original contractor, Tiger Construction, returned to make repairs under warranty despite the warranty having expired.
At the middle school, Yeager highlighted HVAC and plumbing work: crews added ductwork to auxiliary spaces and completed roughly 35 plumbing work orders over the summer. "This campus is really outgrowing what it's built for," Yeager said, adding that staff performed extra painting and installed new ADA ramps.
At the high school, staff reported progress on lighting upgrades and that the campus irrigation is now fully operational and automated. Yeager summarized a larger remediation project after a Department of Health violation in October 2023 related to standing effluent in the drain field. The district said it secured OSPI funding to cover the full remediation (the presenter cited $550,000), hired Iverson Earthworks, excavated about 7,200 cubic yards of material, replaced piping and fill, and completed the project on Aug. 26, which the presenter described as "on schedule, under budget."
The presentation also noted athletic-field adjustments forced by the drain-field work: the football practice field was moved and the Meridian Boosters Club purchased irrigation equipment; a local equipment vendor donated a restored roller that staff refurbished and used over the summer.
The board asked clarifying questions and thanked staff for the compressed summer efforts. No formal board action was required on the facilities report; several related administrative and interlocal agreements were discussed elsewhere on the agenda and remain pending.
