Board reviews multiple policy updates including PE mastery credit and updated procedures for student interviews

At the Feb. 19 meeting the board received first readings of several policy updates spanning curriculum credit, graduation procedures and interviews of students on campus.

Policy 2407 would establish a mastery-based option for earning physical‑education credit, including competency demonstrations and an 80‑hour directed‑athletics path for students who participate extensively in outside athletics. Staff said the procedure will include competency assessments tied to state PE standards and a process for counselors to document directed‑athletics hours.

Policy 2410 (graduation requirements) was updated to align the board’s procedure with RCW 28A.603.010 and House Bill 1146, with new language to notify students in grades 9–12 about dual‑credit opportunities and to clarify culminating project and senior presentation requirements.

Administrators also reviewed policy 3226 and related procedures governing interviews and interrogations of students on school premises. Because recent federal executive guidance has shifted, staff are revising language about immigration agents and said they will produce an updated procedure that clarifies immediate parental notification unless notification would jeopardize student safety. The district attorney’s office will review the procedural language to ensure compliance with FERPA and state law.

Board members asked for follow‑up clarifications on parental notification timing, the age thresholds referenced in the procedure and attorney feedback; staff said a revised procedure will be circulated before the next board meeting.
