RISD board approves 2025–26 student code of conduct, policy revisions; accepts more than $160,000 in gifts

At its Aug. 7 meeting, the Richardson ISD Board of Trustees approved the 2025–26 student code of conduct, adopted revisions to several district policies and accepted gifts totaling more than $160,000, board President Chris Poteet said.
The board approved several consent-agenda items that included multiple bids, contracts and cumulative purchases, contract change orders and utility agreements (electricity, water and natural gas) for the 2025–26 school year. Trustees also approved appraisal calendars and waivers — including the teacher appraisal calendar, principal and administrator appraisal calendars, and a staff development waiver.
Poteet said the board accepted gifts "totaling over $160,000" and thanked PTAs and partners for their support. He specifically acknowledged donations from Applied Materials and State Farm to stock a classroom supply store for new teachers and reported that each high school campus earned Dallas County Promise Economic Mobility Awards to support college and career readiness. The board also recognized Raylan Benters, an incoming freshman at Pierce High School, as the Texas Outstanding Interpretation Awardee and National Silver Medalist in the National PTA Reflections Program for the piece "Unrefined Waters."
Trustees approved revisions to policies including electronic communication devices, extracurricular participation by non-enrolled students, and acquisition of library materials. Poteet said these changes are the result of recent legislation and that campuses will share additional information with parents in coming weeks.
As informational items, the board received a student performance update and a preliminary accountability preview. Poteet said RISD students showed gains in a majority of tested subject areas and increases in advanced placement and college, career and military readiness, but cautioned that year-to-year ratings are not directly comparable. He noted that the Texas Education Agency is expected to release final campus and district ratings on Aug. 15.
