Saint Bernard committee swears in treasurer, tables annual snack-and-beverage resolution

The Saint Bernard Committee of the Whole ceremonially swore in Kim Derenkamp as the village treasurer during its Jan. 9 meeting. Mayor Stutchell administered the oath; Derenkamp then briefly delivered the treasurer's report. "The closing balance as of the end of the year, 12/31/2024, was $11,137,728.30," she said.

The meeting included routine administrative reports. Tax Administrator Miss Helms reported December 2024 tax collections of $1,857,960, a 1.34% decrease ($25,202) from December 2023, and warned residents about scam calls falsely claiming to represent the tax office. Helms said 550 residents remain on the 2023 list for not filing Saint Bernard tax returns and that the office is working on assessments and warrants where appropriate.

Council considered Resolution Number 1 (an annual authorization to use public funds for refreshments at certain municipal events). Council member Schultmeyer moved and Estep seconded a motion to place Resolution Number 1 on the table for the next council meeting; the motion carried on a voice vote. Earlier, council approved the written minutes of the Dec. 19 meeting on a motion by Schultmeyer, seconded by Estep.

Other reports: the mayor and multiple committee chairs thanked the service, police and fire departments for snow-clearing efforts. Finance chair Morton announced the next finance committee meeting for Jan. 15 at 6 p.m. in the lower level of City Hall and said the "community connect" series will move to quarterly sessions. Marketing announced upcoming recreation sign-ups and summer employment opportunities at the rec office.

In public comment, event organizers confirmed that the Saint Clement athletic booster tournament will proceed as scheduled and former service employee Don Mittendorf praised the department's response and outlined staffing plans for the next storm. The meeting adjourned following a motion by Culbertson, seconded by Estep.
