The Lakewood Board of Education on Sept. 16 approved a second guaranteed maximum price amendment with Regency Construction to fund renovations and an addition for the West Shore Career Technical District at Lakewood High School. The amendment, listed as GMP No. 2, totals $5,833,861 and brings the board's estimated West Shore project cost to $7,218,500.
The amendment was presented by a board member and moved and seconded for approval on one reading. The board approved the motion by roll call; the clerk recorded 'Aye' votes from the members listed during roll call and the motion carried. The board noted an Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) grant and a district cofunding amount that were discussed during the presentation, and an encumbrance deadline of Sept. 30, 2024 was cited for grant funds.
In the same motion block the board approved an agreement with ODS Transportation to provide athletic and field-trip transportation at a rate of $127 per hour (minimum four hours per trip). The superintendent recommended the contract as a supplemental provider to increase available transportation capacity.
Also approved were grouped human resources and community-services items: the board approved 111 certified actions, multiple classified actions including six resignations requested on one reading, several coach/advisor actions and community recreation/education actions. One board member described the personnel items as routine actions discussed at the first meeting of the month and recommended approval.
The superintendent and district staff framed the GMP presentation with a Regency Construction update delivered to the board earlier in the meeting. Project manager Deborah Paul told the board the welding addition will start in October 2024 with an expected completion in August 2025, and the MEMS renovation is projected to begin in November with an eight-month duration. Paul said much of the construction will occur on second shift to minimize classroom disruption and described the major scope elements including foundations, masonry, structural steel, mechanical/electrical/plumbing work and an elevator for second-floor access.
The board also discussed procedure: the chair clarified the first of two resolutions was a first reading and not before the board for a vote, while the second was presented for one-reading approval. With no further business the board adjourned.
