Board hears referendum and facilities updates; land-agreement with developer delays Ponds elementary handover

Dorchester 02 facilities staff told the board on Feb. 24 that several referendum projects are moving forward while a separate land-agreement issue involving the Ponds elementary site remains unresolved.

Staff said Sand Hill Elementary is actively under construction, with site work and silt fencing beginning and the project on track. The Ponds elementary project has a building permit, but staff and board members noted lingering development agreement provisions with the developer and the county that could delay the district’s ability to occupy the site.

A facilities committee member asked whether the board could take steps to help secure deed transfer. District staff described recent outreach, including meetings among the board chair, county council chair and county staff to encourage progress. "We are very engaged in it," Superintendent Robbins said, and staff said they will continue discussions to try to resolve the issue so the building can be ready for an August occupancy.

Facilities staff also listed other upcoming projects: a bus maintenance facility tied to Oak Brook Middle School work, press-box bids for the Summerville High softball field due March 6, planned HVAC replacements and locker-room HVAC work slated for the summer, and design work on tennis courts. Staff said secure vestibule installations will be prioritized over spring break and completed by summer if possible.

Board members asked for additional updates and for staff to pursue formal communications if needed to resolve land-agreement impediments.
