Dorchester School District 2 has been selected as one of 10 districts in the nation to participate in the Attendance Lab, a program developed by the American Institutes for Research aimed at reducing chronic absenteeism.
Superintendent Dr. Robbins said the district is "one of only 10 schools in the country to be awarded this," and invited Tina Bohannon to explain the initiative. Bohannon told the board the program includes monthly on-site visits and a district team that will work with the provider. "It is free, totally free," Bohannon said, describing the American Institutes for Research as the developer of the program and noting the work will continue through December 2025.
Bohannon and the superintendent said the program's work will focus on chronic absenteeism and related truancy issues that rose after the pandemic; Bohannon noted the district already decreased its chronic absenteeism rate districtwide by 5 percentage points in the 2022–23 school year. She also said the district will meet the assigned specialist in a Teams meeting and expects an on-site visit in March.
Dr. Robbins thanked Bohannon for spearheading the effort and noted her role leading the district's attendance work.
Next steps: district staff will coordinate the American Institutes for Research site visits and provide periodic updates to the board while the one-year engagement continues through December 2025.
