Dorchester 02 superintendent highlights STEMmersion, grants and staff-childcare plans

Superintendent Dr. Robbins used the Feb. 24 meeting to brief the Dorchester 02 Board of Trustees on district partnerships, newly awarded grants and an initiative to provide staff childcare.
Michelle McDonald, deputy director of Dorchester economic development and a Tri County STEMmersion representative, described the program set for June 9–13 that brings educators and counselors for hands-on training connecting classroom instruction to industry. "We pay them a training stipend while they're with us," McDonald said, and she urged district staff to publicize the application (applications close Friday) so Dorchester 02 is well represented.
Robbins also announced three recent awards the district won: a $150,000 safety grant; selection as one of 32 districts for a strategic compensation pilot (Robbins said the district received $218,000 for one school); and a $30,000 family literacy grant for 2025.
On staffing supports, Robbins gave an update on a staff-childcare initiative: a site has been identified, a thought-exchange survey found more than 91 teachers said they would use the service and the district will meet prospective providers to work on a leasing plan with the aim of opening in 2025.
Board members asked that the district share application links and QR codes via ParentSquare to increase participation. Robbins said the QR code links directly to the STEMmersion application and her contact appears on the site.
