Summary

At its Dec. 3 meeting the Pembroke School Committee voted to approve three MIAA middle-level waivers that allow eighth graders to participate in listed winter sports when roster sizes warrant.
Under the first motion, the committee approved a waiver to permit eighth-grade students to join winter cheerleading; presenters said eight Pembroke girls were currently registered and that opening the roster to eighth graders could raise participation to roughly 12–14. "Right now, we just have 8 girls registered," the presenter said, noting the waiver simply gives the district flexibility to field a safer-sized squad.
The committee then approved an MIAA middle-level waiver for gymnastics, which runs as a cooperative program with Silver Lake. Officials said gymnastics functions primarily as an individual sport and coaches can split athletes into appropriate groups; the motion passed without objection.
On girls' basketball, committee members were told 20 girls were currently registered — enough for varsity and JV — but staff recommended filing a waiver as a safeguard in case numbers fell. "At this point, we're not looking to add eighth grade girls... but if the number drops to 15 or 16, then we're gonna need to add a few girls," the presenter said. The committee approved the waiver and recorded the vote as unanimous.
No detailed roll-call tallies were provided for these votes in the public record; the meeting transcript records the motions as carried by unanimous voice votes. Committee members said waivers would be filed with the MIAA only if roster circumstances required them.
