Canton trustees approve $60,000 elections grant, multiple contracts and policies in routine business

During a regular meeting the board accepted a $60,000 election administration grant, approved several contracts and purchase-order increases for parks, public works and facilities, authorized a fireworks permit, amended an agreement for fire-related design work, and adopted new board policies to expand Youth Advisory Council participation and standardize ordinance preparation.
The Canton Township Board of Trustees approved a package of grants, contracts and policy updates during its meeting.
Clerk Seager reported the Canton Clerk’s Office had been awarded a $60,000 Institute for Responsive Government grant to help offset temporary election staff costs and to fund voter education about early voting and new voting methods; the board approved accepting the grant and an associated budget amendment. The clerk said the township had received similar grants in prior election cycles and expected the funds before year-end.
The board also authorized a $13,760 contract with Michigan Consulting & Environmental to complete a HUD-required environmental review for Zipwiz Park (6125 North Ridge Road), approved a $172,714 purchase-order increase for AM Higley to finish trades for a Public Works storage facility, and approved a $59,493 contract with GSI Incorporated to replace the security camera head-end server after staff noted aging cameras and federal restrictions on some models.
Other approvals included a $15,400 contract to replace drinking fountains at the Village Theater at Cherry Hill, a $162,077.75 contract to replace three rooftop HVAC units at Fellows Creek Golf Course, a $19,476 increase in scope to GHD for a FEMA Letter of Map Change for Fire Station No. 2, and an amended Partners in Architecture agreement adding $62,446 in reimbursable costs for geotechnical analysis and emergency traffic-signal design. The board also authorized a fireworks permit for a Heritage Park display on Oct. 18 (rain date Oct. 19). All motions were approved by voice votes.
On governance, trustees adopted board policy TB3 to provide space for two Youth Advisory Council student representatives to participate at the admin table and present to the board and adopted TB04 to standardize ordinance amendment preparation procedures; the board also approved a PTO adjustment granting the director of police services an additional 144 PTO hours for the remainder of 2024 consistent with a deferred-retirement agreement. Trustees said the TB3 change is a pilot that will be discussed at a study session early next year and stressed there remain other avenues for resident participation on boards and commissions.
