County staff told the Hall County Board of Commissioners that homeowners who suffered basement and other storm-related damage should file Form 425 (Report of Damaged Real Property) with the county clerk by July 15 to pursue a temporary assessment reduction.
Christy, speaking for the county assessor's office, said the law requires damage to exceed 20% of the property's current assessed value to qualify. She added that the assessor's office must physically inspect properties reported as damaged and provide a report to the board by July 18, creating a narrow window for residents to submit forms and for county staff to perform inspections.
Christy said many affected homes had finished basements damaged by recent heavy rains and that some owners may not have reported basement finishes to the assessor previously, which could affect eligibility. She encouraged residents who do not expect to fully repair damage before year-end to file the form as soon as possible so the county can inspect and consider removal of value from the tax roll where appropriate.
Christy also said forms are available at the county office and online and urged residents to contact the assessor's office for guidance. The board did not take formal action on this item; it was presented as informational with a short, time-sensitive filing requirement.
