The Hollywood City Commission on Oct. 1 approved a contract with Cardinal Contractors for repairs to the grit‑removal system at the South Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in an amount not to exceed approximately $6,420,000.
Public Works staff explained that grit — sand‑like particles that the plant cannot capture with screens — has accumulated in clarifiers and grit chambers and reduced the facility’s capacity and effectiveness. City staff said the project is deferred maintenance necessary to restore capacity, improve effluent quality and help the plant maintain compliance.
Commissioners asked operational questions and voiced support; the motion to award the contract passed unanimously on roll call.
Implementation: Staff said the repairs will be overseen by the city’s construction administration consultant and that this is a priority deferred maintenance item for the Department of Public Utilities.
