Board hears Lightspeed demo, plans parent portal opt‑in at registration

A staff member explained the Nashville School District's Lightspeed system to the board, saying it combines a content filter, real‑time safety alerts and classroom management tools that follow district Chromebooks off campus.

"Lightspeed alert is 100% about student safety," the staff member said, describing alerts that route screenshots and contextual history to building counselors or principals when the system detects concerns such as possible self‑harm, bullying or planning of violence. The presenter said alerts are targeted to those staff members so they can assess context before intervening.

The staff member walked the board through a live demo of the Parent Portal, which will provide parents with a weekly online activity summary and an optional sign‑in to view seven days of device activity. From the portal, parents can temporarily pause web browsing at home for one hour, three hours or until the next morning; the presenter said the tool uses geofencing so pausing at home will not interrupt instruction if the child returns to school.

The presentation emphasized three Lightspeed components: the filter (which uses categories to allow or block classes of sites), the alert system (which monitors searches, visited sites and text in documents), and classroom management (which lets teachers view student screens and lock browsing during instruction). The staff member acknowledged limits of raw logs, noting that some blocked items are advertising or incidental search results and that counselors must use the contextual screenshots to distinguish benign activity from red flags.

Board members asked about cost and vendor scale. The staff member said the Parent Portal is included in the district's current Lightspeed subscription and that the district has paid for Lightspeed's services for several years. "Parent portal is included in that," the staff member said. A board member asked how Lightspeed compares to other providers; the presenter said Lightspeed is one of the largest vendors, with tens of thousands of school customers worldwide and that the district previously evaluated several vendors before adopting Lightspeed.

The staff member said the district plans to roll out Parent Portal during student registration next year. Parents will be offered an opt‑in during registration, provide an email address, and receive an automated welcome message with a link to activate their portal account. Activation will be synchronized with the district's student information system, and once activated parents will receive weekly summary emails by default; parents may opt out of the emails or sign in to use the full portal.

The presentation noted privacy safeguards: alerts are routed to a small group of designated staff and include screenshots and history so counselors can assess context before contacting students or families. The staff member said the district is working with Lightspeed developers to test the product, prepare staff procedures and produce a landing page with instructions for parents ahead of registration.

Next steps: district staff will finalize testing, prepare office staff for activation procedures tied to the student information system, and present rollout materials at registration so parents can opt in and receive weekly summaries.
