Board hears K–2 screening plan and 90‑minute intervention proposal to support third‑grade reading

At the August 18 meeting, the Nashville School District presented academic reporting focused on foundational reading and early intervention.

Mr. Gordon (speaker 2) described the district’s approach: screen K–2 students with the ATLAS screener in the first weeks of school, identify students scoring level 1 or level 2, develop Individual Reading Plans (IRPs) and provide approximately 90 minutes per day of intensive intervention delivered by reading specialists or teachers holding master/lead credentials. "What we're trying to do at this point is to identify those level 1 and level 2 students… put a plan in place for them," Mr. Gordon said.

The district is using a professional learning grant to train teachers and to develop in‑district capacity so more staff can deliver interventions. The superintendent/staff (speaker 5) emphasized implementation challenges because the state education department had not yet supplied final rules and scoring formulas, calling the process "building it as we fly it" while the district prepares schedules and interventions.

Board members pressed for clarity on timing and the date for getting screener results back so parents can be engaged. Staff said they expect the ATLAS screener data within a short period after initial administration but noted some uncertainty about the state’s final policy details.

The board scheduled a fuller public report for the September meeting that will include enrollment and student growth/test‑score reporting.
