School board reviews draft AI policy, plans staff training and academic-integrity rules

Superintendent/staff member (speaker 5) told the board the committee’s recommendations would train teachers on acceptable classroom uses and align district guidance with partner colleges for dual-enrollment courses. ‘‘The use of AI tools such as ChatGPT and Grammarly, or similar technologies, without explicit instructor permission, we’ll call an academic integrity violation,’’ the superintendent said, describing a proposed enforcement approach.
Board members and staff discussed practical matters such as detection and instructional use. One teacher/staff speaker (speaker 12) cautioned that current detection tools are limited: ‘‘We use software, but it doesn’t really tell you the whole lot… it’ll tell you plagiarism,’’ the staff member said, noting detection programs can miss advanced AI-produced text. Another board member (speaker 8) urged funding for technical tools, saying, "I think it’s gonna be important for us to invest in technology to help us battle the technology being used."
The superintendent said the district will provide professional learning so teachers can teach ethical, constructive uses of AI and will update the board with a finalized policy (item referenced for the board policy manual, PPC 5.3). A second committee meeting is scheduled to finalize the district’s draft before it is returned to the board for formal consideration.
The board did not adopt a final policy at the meeting; the district plans to present an updated, more definitive draft that spells out consequences and classroom guidance at a future meeting.
