The Nashville School District board at a special July 1 meeting accepted resignations from junior high band director Valeria Cordera and high school secretary Christy Thornton and approved five staff hires, a staff member said.
The staff member recommended the board accept Cordera’s letter of resignation and Thornton’s notice that she will leave to work for another local business. "I recommend that we accept both those resignations," the staff member said.
The board also approved five employment recommendations: Macy Bracken to replace Sarah Smith in elementary science on a 5/8ths contract (described as a half-day teacher plus one conference period); Sandra Pinkstaff as an outside contracted specialist for visually impaired students (expected roughly one day per week); Hadley Lewis for junior high band; Jesse Duggar for elementary science; and Kaylee Marshall to transfer from the primary school to run the elementary computer lab. "She'll be a 5 eights teacher," the staff member said of Bracken's schedule.
A board member moved to accept the resignations as presented; the motion was seconded and the board indicated assent when asked for a voice vote. Later a motion to accept the employment recommendations was made and seconded and again met with board assent.
Staff told the board it is still advertising for a high school position and described Dontrail Robinson, a current student teacher with the district, as a candidate they hope to hire if he obtains an aspiring teacher certificate. The staff member said hiring Robinson would help the district add a needed minority staff member.
Why it matters: the hires address immediate instructional needs ahead of the school year and will shape class coverage and specialist services. The board scheduled another meeting in July to review preliminary budgets and start finalizing allocations for the coming year.
The board adjourned after completing the personnel items; members were told preliminary budgets should be ready for review at the next meeting.
