The Sayreville Board of Education at its reorganization meeting swore in three newly elected board members and elected new leadership before approving the reorganization agenda and entering executive session.
Lucille Bloom, Christopher Callahan and Jeffrey Smith each took the statutory oath of office and signed their certificates. Bloom recited the oath verbatim: "I, Lucille Bloom, do solemnly swear that I will support the constitution of the United States and the constitution of the state of New Jersey..." Callahan and Smith repeated the same oath as required for board members.
The board then moved to leadership elections. Board members used a written ballot procedure: each member wrote a last name on paper and the clerk read votes aloud. The clerk reported that "mister Fernandez" received six votes while Lucille Bloom received three, and declared Mr. Fernandez elected board president. In the vice president contest the clerk read four votes for Jeffrey Smith and five votes for Lady Maldonado, and declared Lady Maldonado elected vice president.
After the elections, the newly seated president offered brief remarks thanking outgoing leadership and pledging to "listen and lead with fairness, respect" and to place students' interests at the center of the board's work. The president also noted the board's recent diversification and said the current leadership includes the first Latina vice president.
The board reviewed scheduling for the coming year; members and Dr. Lavey discussed conflicts between proposed board meeting dates and school events including honor society inductions, senior barbecue and parent-teacher conferences, and agreed to ask principals to avoid scheduling conflicts when possible.
With no public comments on reorganization items, the board voted to accept the reorganization agenda by roll call. The clerk then read a motion to enter executive session "for the purpose of discussing personnel, student matters, attorney-client privilege, and negotiations with the SCA," which passed and led the board to move into closed session.
What happens next: the public portion of the meeting paused so the board could address the listed confidential topics in executive session. The transcript does not record outcomes from that closed session.
