Bethel Local board approves 2025'26 and 2026'27 school calendars after debate over voting in work session

After a lengthy discussion on whether a work session is the appropriate forum for voting on substantive items, the Bethel Local Board of Education approved the 2025'26 and 2026'27 school calendars by roll call.

The agenda item drew disagreement about urgency and notice. One board member argued that work sessions should be for discussion only and that voting should be reserved for regularly scheduled meetings, while others said a one-week delay would disrupt district processes such as the school-year initialization and bus scheduling.

A public commenter urged the board to avoid voting on work-session agendas "unless it is a true emergency," saying the policies attached to the agenda did not clearly show changes and that community members needed time to review proposed edits. "If the answer to whether you'd call an emergency meeting is no, then it can wait until the next meeting," the commenter said.

After a motion and second, the board took a roll call on the calendar approval. The transcript records votes as Missus Esquivel: Yes; Missus Dahler: Yes; Missus Dahmer: No; Mister Dey: Yes; another member recorded No. The motion carried and the calendars were approved.

The chair said the board would continue to honor two-day draft access and requested that any member asking for items to be pulled be given the opportunity to receive answers prior to a vote. The board also directed staff to publish calendar and policy information ahead of the business meeting so community members can review it in the workshop setting.
