York County commissioners approve employee gym equipment purchase; equipment to be paid from seizure funds

Staff presented three equipment bids and recommended Johnson Fitness; one quote for all equipment was quoted at about $49,000. A county representative said that equipment purchase would come from federal seizure funds rather than the county’s general tax dollars. The only county costs would be room improvements — flooring, painting and minor electrical work — that county staff estimated at up to about $15,000 and suggested could be paid from ARPA funds.
Commissioners discussed bid thresholds and noted two of the three equipment bids were below the sealed-bid threshold, allowing the board to choose the most suitable vendor. One staff speaker said the Johnson Fitness equipment would be easier and cheaper to service locally than an out-of-state supplier.
Board members emphasized the gym is for county employees only and not open to the public. The board approved a motion to proceed with the recommended supplier and asked staff to identify the precise accounting codes so the purchase can be coded when the invoice arrives.
