Warren City superintendent says social‑media threat and gun report were false

Superintendent Mr. Shiro told the Warren City Board of Education on Sept. 24 that recent social‑media posts alleging threats to district schools and a claim that a gun was pulled at a football game were false and not credible. "The answer is no. There was not a threat," Mr. Shiro said, describing district and law‑enforcement checks after posts circulated around Sept. 12.

Shiro said the district reviewed video, spoke with school resource officers and consulted the prosecutor's office about whether posts amounted to inducing panic. He told the board prosecutors were unlikely to pursue charges for after‑the‑fact social‑media posts, but said the posts had nonetheless caused community concern and prompted extra calls and police presence at school events.

On the football post, Shiro said he had spoken with administrators and officers on site and called the claim that a gun had been displayed "not true." He described the end‑of‑game police presence as an effort to help disperse students, not a response to a reported weapon.

Shiro also raised a separate safety concern at Willard PK–8: repeated vandalism to playgrounds outside school hours. He said the school is evaluating options, including high fencing, to reduce recurring damage and staff time spent on clean‑up. "The building is safe," he added, but said outside‑of‑hours vandalism is costly and disruptive.

The board did not take formal policy action at the meeting but heard Shiro's update and acknowledged continuing coordination with law enforcement and school staff.
