Jefferson PK–8 staff outline student engagement work; district to get mobile STEM lab

Principal Boyer and the Jefferson PK–8 administrative team presented to the Warren City School District Board of Education on Jan. 28, 2025, describing a range of classroom and out-of-school programs aimed at boosting student engagement and whole-child supports.
Boyer, identified as the campus leader and new principal for school improvement, said the school has adopted a Lighthouse Project to focus engagement each nine weeks and emphasized a growth-mindset theme in visuals and instruction. "Our theme is growth mindset," she said, noting district supports and curricular work tied to that approach.
Miss Washington, the 6–8 principal, described reciprocal feedback practices that she said improve instruction and student ownership of learning. She cited professional development (Safe and Civil Schools) and peer-to-peer classroom observations as drivers of classroom management and instructional growth.
A separate presenter detailed enrichment and engagement opportunities at Jefferson: a Camp Fitch trip for fifth graders, a pen-pal program with Saint Joe's Hospital, cross-grade "J-pals," Butler Art Museum visits, the Men of Distinction mentoring program for select boys, NWEA MAP goal-setting conversations, and expanded after-school programming through 21st Century and Inspiring Minds.
Superintendent Shiro also announced the district is acquiring a 38-foot mobile STEM lab currently in production in Reynoldsburg, which the district plans to place in rotation at schools. The superintendent said the vehicle is being funded with ARP dollars and is expected to be in the district by the start of next school year.
Board members praised the Jefferson team’s attendance, community partnerships and the range of family engagement events. Several trustees asked clarifying questions about specific programs — including "Jefferson Prime" and planned family events — and the administration said they would provide further updates and may return to a future agenda with more detail.
The presentation concluded with the board thanking teachers and staff and acknowledging student participation in the after-school and enrichment programs. The board took no formal action on the programs beyond accepting the presentation.
