Kinnelon juniors post 96.4% ELA proficiency on NJGPA; district outlines retake pathways

Lauren Thomas, the district’s director of curriculum, instruction and assessment, presented the Kinnelon results for the NJGPA (graduation proficiency assessment) and explained how the district supports students who do not initially reach the required cut score.
"This year, 96.4% passing [ELA], which is amazing," Thomas said, and reported a math pass rate of 78.8%, both above the state average. She described three pathways to show graduation readiness: meeting the NJGPA cutoff, using alternate assessment scores (SAT/PSAT), or compiling a portfolio of student work and constructed responses for state review.
Thomas said the district had identified approximately 29 students initially found not graduation‑ready in math; using SAT/PSAT as a second pathway allowed 11 of those students to be counted as proficient, leaving about 18 students who will have a fall retake opportunity. For ELA, only a handful of students remained below the cut and will be offered retake or alternate pathways.
To expand options, the district has purchased the Accuplacer as an additional pathway and will provide retake windows this fall. Thomas said she will report NJSLA results in September and will notify parents of individual student results and available next steps.
What happens next: administration will communicate retest schedules and assist students through alternate pathways (Accuplacer and portfolio assessment) as needed.
