District staff announces grants, student events and upcoming Special Olympics

At the March 2 meeting a district staff member summarized recent and upcoming programs across Jones County Schools, including teacher professional development, student leadership days and community fundraising.

The staff member said that Laura Parks and Janelle Anstrom “have obtained an NC SIP grant,” which will fund professional development focused on elementary math for both general-education and EC teachers during the summer. The staff member called the grant a free funding source for the district’s professional development.

The board heard that Delta Delta Kappa Gamma (Jones County chapter) raised nearly $2,800 for grants and scholarships at a Soup Supper and that the NC Symphony Quartet visited Maysville and Trenton Elementary earlier in the week. The district named Denise Koda Robles, a junior at Jones Senior High School, as this year’s governor’s page; the student will spend time at the state Capitol in Raleigh during the summer.

Staff also announced student participation in an American250 celebration at the Civic Center on March 14 (event begins at 5 p.m., food will be served) and reminded the board of Maysville Student Leadership Day on March 25 at 9 a.m. The Jones County Public Schools Special Olympics is scheduled for April 17 at Jones Senior High School’s football field and track, beginning at 9 a.m.

The staff member noted an upcoming NC film production planned to visit district schools on a Friday through Sunday to avoid disrupting instruction.
