Finance committee authorizes mayor to sign UAB medical direction contract for EMS

The Homewood City Finance Committee voted 3–0 on June 17 to authorize the mayor to sign a contract with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) for medical direction services to oversee the city’s emergency medical services program.

The chair moved the item and said the contract is already budgeted and that having a physician oversee EMS is required by law. The president told the committee the current medical director, identified in the discussion as Dr. Hudson of Fort Hood, does not have sufficient time to increase involvement and the city is seeking a physician who can provide more hands-on oversight; committee discussion referenced a possible replacement identified as “Dr. Darren.”

The motion to approve was made and seconded and the chair called the vote; the item passed unanimously, 3–0. The chair said the approved request will be sent to the full council for final action next week.
