Grant County adopts higher Bellevue tile assessment rates after public hearing

The Grant County Drainage Board approved new assessment rates for the Bellevue tile following a public hearing. The board read both current and proposed rates into the record and adopted the published rates by voice vote.
Current rates read by staff were $5 per acre, $25 per home site and $5 per parcel with a four-year collection period. The board adopted proposed rates that raise the per-acre charge to $10, set $150 per home site, $100 per parcel, $4.50 for commercial properties and extend the collection period to eight years. According to staff’s reading, the change would increase expected receipts from $1,275.90 under the current schedule to approximately $7,571 for the maintenance fund.
At the public hearing a resident who identified herself as Jean Nichols (gave an address in Jonesboro) thanked the board and asked the board to keep the cost reasonable for retirees and fixed-income residents: “We appreciate the drain… we’re retired people, disabled veteran. We’re watching our pennies, so we appreciate the drain. Just try to keep it as decent price for us as you can,” she said. The board responded that the maintenance fund and access points are needed to maintain the ditch and promised staff follow-up on manhole access and maintenance logistics.
Board member S3 moved to adopt the new published Bellevue rates; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. Staff said the increased collection will replenish the maintenance fund and allow the county to install access points (manholes) and better maintain the drain.
