Courthouse expansion nears substantial completion; county reports project on budget

County facilities staff and contractors provided the Board of County Commissioners a monthly update Feb. 25 on the courthouse expansion project, reporting steady progress on exterior cladding, site work, mechanical systems and interior finishes.
Facilities director Lee Randall and Deschutes County facilities staff highlighted recent milestones: installation of a 550‑kilowatt backup generator to support courtroom operations, cladding installation progressing around the building, elevators being set and public‑area glazing and finish work moving forward. Contractor representatives said mechanical rooftop units had been set and systems are entering commissioning, and elevators and plumbing fixtures are being installed.
Pence Construction and the owner's project team set a target for substantial completion on March 27, 2026, with a goal of a May soft opening for court operations and a final project completion in August 2026. The construction cost to date reported in the monthly billing cycle was $34,695,980 (approximately 72% complete). The project currently carries an owner contingency of about $626,000 and a contractor contingency of about $1.1 million; staff said those contingencies are expected to carry the project through completion.
