Pflugerville reports IRA tree‑planting progress; resident presses city on replacing trees lost to road work

At the Nov. 21 meeting the commission received an update on urban forestry activities supported by an IRA (Inflation Reduction Act) Urban and Community Forestry grant and discussed resident concerns about municipal road projects that may require tree removals.
A staff presenter reported the first IRA planting had 32 participants and produced 29 trees in the ground; staff said they expect another planting of 26 trees and additional school-based plantings, placing program completion at roughly 16% so far (not counting spring plantings). "We planted 29 trees, and a couple days after because we were expecting a lot more people to show up for volunteers," the presenter said, noting communications and volunteer outreach need improvement.
A resident raised a question about a city road project on Meadow Creek that may remove mature trees planted 15 or more years ago and asked what the city will do to replace canopy. Staff responded that the parks department maintains leftover trees from planting events and would help replenish trees removed from public spaces; staff also clarified that developer contributions to tree-replacement funds apply when developers remove trees but that those rules differ when the city is the project owner.
Commission members and staff agreed to follow up: staff will check whether the Meadow Creek resurfacing is part of the bond program and will clarify replacement plans and timelines. No formal policy or budget action was adopted at the meeting.
