Auburn council approves $37,376 ABC policing grant for overtime and undercover checks

Police representative Ryan Canyon told the council the grant will allow officers to run enforcement operations “outside of our normal business hours” to check that licensed establishments are following their permits and not selling to minors. He estimated the city has about 90 ABC licenses in a range of categories, from liquor stores to one-day special-event permits.
Councilmember Doudencovia moved the resolution, citing the grant's use for overtime and enforcement, and the motion was seconded and approved by roll call. The resolution authorizes the police department to use the funds for targeted inspections, undercover operations, training for staff and community outreach.
Council members and staff said the work is intended to focus on compliance rather than punitive measures and to reduce underage access to alcohol. The grant funds will support enforcement and associated community-education activities; council did not specify additional local matching funds for this award.
The council's action authorizes staff to accept and implement the grant award; police said they will coordinate scheduling for inspections and report back to the council as the program is implemented.
