Calcasieu Parish School Board honors Milken Award winner Kyle Cook

Kyle Cook, a music educator linked to Maplewood Middle School, was recognized by the Calcasieu Parish School Board Thursday as a winner of the Milken Educator Award and honored for his work with students and teachers.
Speaking during a presentation, the principal introduced Cook as the districts Milken Award recipient. A district official described the award as among the most prestigious for educators and said Cook received a $25,000 prize. "Not only is he now a nationally recognized educator, he got to take home $25,000 with it too," the presenter said, praising Cooks leadership of the Maplewood band program, mentorship of students and teachers and partnerships with McNeese State University.
The superintendents report that followed included several district updates that provide context for the recognition: Head Start program governance items (policy council orientation on Dec. 11, 2024), a $2,500 "Branch Out and Grow" grant for Head Start, and fiscal reports showing December sales tax collections of $1,226,642, cited as 8.5% above budget for the month and year-to-date collections of $3,393,215, or 3.8% above budget. The superintendent also announced that EKP Elementary was named an ITEEA STEM School of Excellence for the third consecutive year and congratulated students who received regional or national honors.
The boards recognition concluded with applause and a formal acknowledgment from the chair. The meeting moved on to routine business after the presentation.
