At its Feb. 11 meeting the Calcasieu Parish School Board approved two separate items by vote: acceptance of a Head Start federal grant and retention of outside counsel for a sales‑tax dispute.
The board voted to accept a Head Start grant totaling $4,818,215 for program sites identified in the motion, including J.D. Clifton Elementary, John F. Kennedy Early Learning Center, and J.I. Watson Elementary. A board member asked whether the action was to apply for funds or to accept them; staff confirmed the district already had the funding and the motion was to accept the award for those centers.
Separately, the board authorized hiring the Laverne law firm to represent the district in a sales‑tax dispute with Boyd Racing LLC. Staff said the taxpayer disputes the district’s assessment of taxes owed; outside counsel will represent the district before the Board of Tax Appeals as needed.
Both motions were presented, seconded and approved by the board. The board also approved a slate of advertising requests to solicit bids for janitorial supplies, copy paper, food‑service items and chemicals under specified bid numbers; those procurement items were approved by voice vote.
