Commissioner Tom Leese was elected chair of the Historical Landmark Commission on Oct. 9, after a nomination from Raybeck and a second from Commissioner Jennifer Johnson, the body announced at the start of its meeting. The outgoing presiding officer said they would remove themselves from consideration for chair and vice chair "because I've had some physical problems," and opened the floor for nominations.
Leese accepted the role and thanked members for their confidence, saying, "I don't think there's any way I can possibly live up to Dr. Smith's legacy," and that he would "take it as we go." The commission then nominated and elected Anne Windeck as vice chair by voice vote after Windeck said she would serve. Commissioners expressed readiness to proceed with duties under the new leadership.
The commission also moved to approve the minutes from September. Commissioner Mark Walker made the motion to approve; Jennifer Johnson seconded. One member abstained, saying they had not attended the prior meeting; the chair declared the minutes approved.
The newly seated leadership will preside over the commission's next meeting, where members expect to begin implementing the preservation outreach steps discussed during this session.
