Several community members used the public‑comment periods to raise facilities, curriculum and student‑recognition concerns.
Cindy Murphy urged the board to close a building the speaker said was past its life expectancy to relieve custodial staffing strains and redeploy floaters to other schools. Murphy also asked that the board not assume any closed building would become a charter school and urged careful use of remodeled facilities elsewhere.
Janice Davis proposed a parent‑funded banner program to recognize graduating seniors (including special‑needs students) to increase motivation and visibility for local high school achievements; she said she had discussed the idea with the mayor and with vendor Jostens. Mary Ellen Slazek supported broadening recognition for students (academic, athletic, community) and said such encouragement historically improved outcomes.
Dr. Michaela Spangenberg and other commenters reiterated concerns about Kelly Services and asked for clarity about whether corrective action plans still apply to the district. Spangenberg also flagged inconsistencies in vendor data and suggested the district develop an in‑house pathway to recruit and retain teachers that might reduce long‑term dependency on contractors.
The board acknowledged the comments, noted plans to promote recent student athletic achievements on WJOB and asked community members to follow up with the superintendent or designated staff after the meeting. Trustees asked staff to collect requested information and to continue outreach on legislative advocacy.
