Ball State yearlong residency pilot places student-teachers in Muncie classrooms with stipends

District staff explained a teacher-residency pilot with Ball State University that placed four student-teachers in Muncie classrooms for a yearlong practicum.
A staff member described the pilot as a more rigorous pathway that keeps student-teachers in the same building for an extended placement rather than moving between practicum sites. "These students at Ball State get paid. They get like $10,000 reimbursed back to them, for their, for their, time of doing that," the staff member said. The district hosted four students this year—one at Southview, two at Northview and one at Grissom with Miss Keever as a host teacher.
The staff member said host teachers must be highly effective and that Ball State students apply for the placement; the district will interview the student-teachers at the end of their placements with the goal of retaining qualified candidates. Trustees asked about space and other supports; Northview staff said additional classroom space and another pre-K class would be beneficial.
No formal board action was recorded on the pilot at this meeting.
