The Muncie Community Schools board reviewed and approved several policy updates at its meeting, including revisions to truancy prevention language and updates to school safety policy language on metal detection.
Board counsel and district staff worked on three revisions: policy C175 to reflect recent Indiana code changes regarding truancy prevention; legal settlement guidance revised and moved into administrative guidelines to align with House Bill 1315; and an update to a 2018 policy on metal detectors that replaces the term "wands" with the broader phrase "metal detection devices" and updates the authority from "superintendent" to "director of public education and CEO." The agency official said most of the metal-detector edits were wordsmithing and that the truancy policy clarifies parent notice, attendance conferences and attendance-plan procedures.
Trustees asked whether the K–6 attendance thresholds are the same for middle and high school; staff confirmed K–6 has distinct requirements while grades 7–12 do not carry the same prosecutor-referral provision. After discussion, a trustee moved and the board approved the updated truancy policy by voice vote.
