Oak Park sets final pool hours, leaders outline timeline for new community center

Oak Park’s City Council on Aug. 18 set the city’s late-season pool hours and heard an update on plans for a new community center that would include an indoor pool.
Deputy City Manager Adam Mlzarczak detailed the late-season schedule through Sept. 6 and two marquee events: the "Last Dip" on Saturday, Sept. 6 (1–6 p.m.) with admission fees (children 3 and under free; residents ages 4–54 $4; ages 55 and up $3) and giveaways for the first 150 attendees, and a dog swim event on Sept. 7. Mlzarczak said reduced hours reflect lifeguard availability as many return to school.
City Manager Eric Tungate provided an update on the community center vision: demolition work is planned this fall and into winter, with architectural planning and additional visioning next spring. Tungate said structural work is expected to begin in 2027 and he estimated construction would take about 24 months, putting full completion in the 2029 timeframe if the schedule holds."I estimate the new community center will take probably 24 months or more to build," Tungate said, adding that staff hope to start construction in 2027.
Council members and staff said the indoor pool was a top priority in recent community visioning and was a key element of the millage question presented to voters. Staff encouraged residents to attend the Last Dip and other community events as the city proceeds with planning.
