Granite City CUSD 9 board recognizes student athletes and photographer, accepts major donations

The Granite City CUSD 9 Board of Education recognized student athletes and a student photographer Wednesday before approving routine business.
Chair (S3) introduced Peyton Petrillo, a seventh-grade student at Coolidge Junior High School who placed second in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 4A state track meet in the 400-meter with a reported time of 58.78 seconds, and Lauren Willett, who placed fourth in the Class 4A discus with a throw of 26.82 meters. "To be able to perform at the level they did is quite impressive and amazing," Board member (S5) said, citing the large scale and pressure of the IESA meet.
The board also recognized Braden Cook for multiple photojournalism awards from Saint Louis Public Radio for work including "Ashes and Rainbows," plus sports- and wildlife-photography honors.
During the consent portion of the meeting, Staff member (S7) announced that Phillips 66 Wood River Refinery donated $50,000 to help support recovery and storm-damage repairs to district schools. S7 also noted the family of Dwayne Boone Cheney donated $1,300 to the Boys and Girls Golf Program. "We just greatly appreciate them," S7 said, noting a press release had been issued for the refinery gift.
The recognitions and donations were recorded before the board moved on to approve the rest of the agenda.
