Granite City CUSD 9 board approves school calendar, website contract, clubs and personnel items

The Granite City Community Unit School District 9 Board of Education approved a slate of routine and programmatic items at its Sept. 23 meeting, including the 2026–27 school calendar, a contract extension with the district’s website vendor, and several personnel and extracurricular actions.
The board voted unanimously to adopt Calendar A for the 2026–27 school year after administration said multiple bargaining units had recommended that option. The board also approved a three-year extension with Finalsite to host the district website and mobile app; administration described the extension as routine and recommended approval.
During new business the board approved the creation of an American Sign Language club at Granite City High School to provide a volunteer-led space for students to learn ASL and learn about Deaf culture; members asked whether the club could evolve into a language class if staffing allows.
The board also approved a memorandum of understanding with the Granite City Federation of Educational Professionals to add two extra lunch-duty positions at both Grigsby Elementary and Pritter Elementary (two positions per school, scheduled across half-hour rotations) to increase supervision during lunch recess. Administrators said the arrangement will be monitored and can be expanded sooner if needed.
Other routine actions approved included acceptance of retirements and resignations, approval of leaves of absence, student-worker and substitute recommendations, extracurricular resignations and assignments, extracurricular volunteer approvals, and the hiring of Jessica Mitchell as a four-hour café worker for 2025–26 (pending required paperwork).
Why it matters: these approvals affect daily school operations, student supervision, extracurricular opportunities and near-term staffing. The MOU for lunch supervision addresses building-level safety and coverage at two elementary schools, while the ASL club expands extracurricular and language access opportunities for high-school students.
