The Buchanan County School Board on June 18 approved a series of maintenance contracts, equipment purchases and a funding authorization to digitize student records.
The board voted to accept a low paving bid from Tayco at $89 per ton on condition of receiving a letter from Lemo East certifying there is no conflict of interest and confirmation of supervisor funding, a motion moved and explained by a board member who said the division would ask Tayco to begin work on the Twin Valley Elementary project first. The motion passed on roll-call vote.
Board members authorized repair work on athletic facilities after hearing quotes from district staff. Adam Cook, who gathered contractor pricing, reported a stadium-light repair quote of $18,556 and a roof-repair quote of $16,184 for the field house at Grundy High School; one replacement quote for the roof was $57,360. The board approved authorization to proceed with repairs of these sites for up to $20,000 each, with the intent of choosing the most cost-effective repairs rather than full replacements unless necessary.
The board approved the purchase of a 2015 Kenworth from Riverside Auto for $55,000 for maintenance use and authorized installation of tool/utility beds and Tommy Gate lifts on district service trucks, citing operational need and prior sale proceeds that generated funds for fleet reinvestment.
On records management, the board reviewed vendor pricing and scope estimates for digitizing student records. Technology staff presented quotes on a per-box and per-image basis and estimated the total conversion would range from about $150,000 to $170,000. The board approved funding for the digitization project up to $170,000 and set a cap to keep the project within the current fiscal-year allocations.
The board also voted to approve a school improvement grant application for Council Elementary (noted in the meeting as a $50,000 grant figure used in prior cycles) and accepted personnel recommendations that included classroom teachers, a speech-language pathology assistant and custodial and food-service hires; several hires were noted as pending licensure. Division superintendent Sherry Fletcher thanked staff and emphasized opportunities that career-technical programs give students.
The board set its next regular meeting for July 30 at 5:30 p.m. and adjourned.
Votes at a glance: the paving bid (Tayco) and the $170,000 records digitization authorization passed by roll-call; the Kenworth purchase and the up-to-$20,000 repair authorizations passed by roll-call votes. Specific vote tallies were recorded verbally during the meeting.
