Parents urge transparency on masking and curriculum at Everett school-board meeting

Two members of the public addressed the Everett School District Board of Directors during the Aug. 24 public-comment period, raising concerns about masking policies and curriculum transparency.
Vanessa Baker, introduced by the board as a district resident and parent/guardian, said her child experienced health complications she attributed to last year’s mask mandate and said the district denied medical exemptions for her child. "Having the mask mandate, he suffered complications ... from a mask and CO2 exposure," Baker said, adding she is now reconsidering whether to send her son to kindergarten because of the prior experience. Board members thanked her for sharing her story; no board member provided a public rebuttal during the meeting.
Jennifer Lutchler, introduced as a resident, employee and parent/guardian of a student, said she is a special-education teacher and a first-grade parent. She praised a Madison Elementary staff member and asked that the district provide more transparency about discussions circulating nationally and locally on curriculum and masking. "My goal is not so much to complain ... I'm just coming to you as a parent of a first grader," Lutchler said.
The board acknowledged the comments and said staff would note the concerns and consider providing additional information. There was no formal action taken on the topics during the meeting.
