Brad Melima presented the list of recommended awards, saying the package was larger than normal because the county had held over some funds from prior cycles. He said the Sturmuseum Foundation’s request for fiber-optic upgrades was funded in full at $275,000 and that the Grand Island Community Baseball Committee would receive $150,000 directed to bathroom and concession improvements at Ryder Park. He also said the committee recommended $100,000 for the Grand Island Livestock Complex Authority and smaller awards for splash-pad improvements, shelter repairs and marketing requests.
Commissioner (speaker 3) disclosed that she sits on the grants committee but said she did not participate in the committee vote and would vote with the board. Commissioners asked questions about specific awards, such as whether the Nebraska Game and Parks request should be funded when some state agencies have delayed reimbursements; Brad Melima said the committee viewed those requests through a “local tourism asset” lens and that some awards are reimbursement grants requiring proof of payment before county funds are released.
After discussion about priorities and funding mechanics, Commissioner (speaker 3) moved to approve the grant package as presented; the motion carried with five yes votes and two no votes.
The board’s action authorizes the chair to sign the necessary resolutions and contract documents; reimbursement and grant-administration details will be handled by the county’s grant administrator prior to disbursement.
