Director Matt told the board the consultant’s assessment identified 473 barriers across parks and facilities, with an estimated cost to address them of about $1,440,000. Of those, staff said 377 remain open; 54 have been resolved and 42 additional items are scheduled. Matt emphasized many items will be addressed as part of construction projects already underway, while smaller-ticket items (signage, minor sidewalk repairs) are being handled through a new MPFDC annual allocation.
Matt described a tiered priority approach tied to Department of Justice guidance: items were classified high (priority 1–4), medium (5–8), and low (9–12). Park- and site-level reports are saved in the board’s Google Drive and staff has built a tracking tool to show open, scheduled, and resolved items, which will be included in the annual report.
Funding and timeline Staff said MPFDC allocated $100,000 per year in the strategic business plan to tackle barriers not automatically remediated through capital projects. Some facilities’ barrier counts reflect the nature of the facility (for example, Big League Dreams had 63 barriers with an estimated $168,000 cost, which staff said was included in contractor budgets where applicable). The board and staff discussed targeting accessible routes, trip hazards, and playground platform heights as higher priorities.
Next steps Staff will continue to schedule barriers for remediation as projects enter design and construction; the board was told the tracking tool will help prioritize work and show progress in future annual reports.
