Summary
County staff submitted a BUILD grant application for the $33.6M Berry Hill Road widening and safety project and requested $25M (80% of construction) from the U.S. DOT BUILD program; staff and commissioners said they would pursue federal advocacy to strengthen the application.
Santa Rosa County staff announced Feb. 24 that they submitted a BUILD grant application to the U.S. Department of Transportation for the Berry Hill Road widening and safety project (Phase 1).
Staff said the total project is estimated at $33,600,000 and the grant application requested $25,000,000, which would fund roughly 80% of construction if awarded. Staff credited Brandon and John Haney for preparing the application and said it was filed earlier that morning.
Commissioners noted the competitive nature of BUILD grants and said they will engage their federal representatives and lobbyists to support the application. Staff added that, if awarded, additional task orders will be required for a concise environmental assessment and other preparatory work.
Next steps: county staff will continue outreach to federal representatives and prepare required task orders for environmental and preconstruction work if the grant is awarded.
