Summary
The zoning board recommended without objection a county proposal to expand the East Milton wellfield protection area to better protect drinking-water sources that serve the southern half of the county; FairPoint Regional Utilities told the board it supports the change.
Santa Rosa County planning staff presented an amendment on Jan. 8 to expand the East Milton Wellfield Protection area north to the Blackwater River and west toward Airport Road. Planning director Sean Ward said the expanded overlay would protect water sources used to supply the southern half of the county and that the change follows staff work on land-development-code updates.
Jeff Craigler, executive director of FairPoint Regional Utilities, told the board the utility supports the expansion because the wellfield protections apply to the water system FairPoint serves. "Further protection of that resource, we think it's a great thing," Craigler said.
The zoning board voted to recommend the map and text amendment without objection; the recommendation will move to the Board of County Commissioners for final action.
