Springdale council approves emergency purchase of 1,500 tons of rock salt

The Springdale City Council voted unanimously Dec. 3 to adopt Ordinance 48-20-25, declaring an emergency to allow the city to enter an agreement with Morton Salt Inc. for 1,500 tons of rock salt.
Councilmember Jacobs read the ordinance and described the purchase as the result of a joint bidding process with the City of Cincinnati that identified Morton Salt as the lowest and best bidder. The ordinance authorizes the mayor and city administrator to execute the agreement and directs the finance officer/tax commissioner to pay Morton Salt consistent with the bid price.
The meeting record shows the measure was moved and seconded and approved by roll-call vote with seven affirmative votes. Council added the emergency clause to permit the city to secure salt “at the earliest possible date” so crews can treat roads and bridges to ensure safe travel.
The presiding officer thanked public works for recent performance, saying their recent response showed the city’s roads “look great,” and members took that as confirmation of the need to ensure continued winter road treatment supplies.
The ordinance text states the purchase will be for 1,500 tons of bulk rock salt; the adopted legislation declares the emergency and authorizes payment per the bid. The ordinance will take effect as soon as law permits.
