Commissioners back plan to pursue smaller regional medical‑examiner facility after Seminole/Lake split

Sumter County commissioners discussed a regional dispute over the medical examiner service area and directed staff Jan. 20 to proceed with an option that would allow the remaining counties to build a smaller regional facility closer to Sumter County.

Staff presented a letter dispatched by Marion County opposing Seminole and Lake counties’ plan to leave the current district arrangement. Commissioners said the prolonged negotiation has produced little progress over the last eight months and discussed two options: block the split at the state level or proceed with building a smaller facility sized for the remaining counties and sited near the intersection of 42 and U.S. 301.

Several commissioners favored the second option as more constructive. "I think we'd be better off to go to Marion County and say, why don't we just let those two go on their happy way and basically do what their option was," one commissioner said; another added, "We're better off long term. It puts the services closer to our county." Arnold said the county would proceed with communications and talk to the other remaining counties about a smaller facility and shared construction costs.

The board instructed staff to send Marion County a letter stating Sumter’s position (option 2) and to continue discussions with regional partners about design, sizing and cost control. Staff did not provide a construction estimate at the workshop, and commissioners asked staff to return with cost scenarios and next steps for regional coordination.
