Board approves student travel for science fair, ISEF qualifiers and DECA nationals

The Grants‑Cibola County Schools board approved three student travel items: overnight travel for state science fair students to Socorro in April, travel for district ISEF qualifiers to Columbus, Ohio in May and out‑of‑state travel for Laguna Acoma High School DECA students to the national conference.
Vanessa Fernando, DECA adviser, presented cost estimates for the DECA trip (registration $100–$227 depending on deadlines; a quoted hotel rate around $250 per night; sample flight estimates around $544 outbound and $539 return per person, subject to change). Fernando said there are six travelers for DECA and that some funds are already in the chapter account; the PO for attraction tickets goes to National DECA rather than New Mexico DECA.
For science fair travel, the board was told that roughly 46 students from across the district advanced to the state level; the specific overnight trip to Socorro was recommended by administration, moved and seconded by board members, and carried on roll call. The ISEF qualifiers’ travel to Columbus (May 10 onward) was similarly moved, seconded and approved.
Board members asked about timelines, chaperone arrangements, and funding. Administration confirmed there would be action items and/or requisitions to follow so that budgets and requisition/PO matching could be verified ahead of travel.
