Polk County proclaims Welcoming Week and Recovery Month; recovery leaders and organizers speak at meeting

The Polk County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Welcoming Week (Sept. 13Sept. 20) and declaring September as Recovery Month.
Supervisor Brownell read the Welcoming Week proclamation and invited residents to a free community meal and resource fair on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Northwest Community Center. Keisha, one of the organizers, said the event is free and highlighted four partnering sponsors: Des Moines Water Works, Iowa Juneteenth, Creative Visions and Knock and Drop Iowa. Keisha said the outreach has grown over three years and announced a new "catalyst for community" award to be revealed at the meal.
The board also read a proclamation recognizing Recovery Month, citing the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) definition of recovery and national figures mentioned in the proclamation. Cindy West, executive director of Full Circle Recovery Community Centers, described her personal recovery experience and the role of peer recovery support services. "We do recover," she said, thanking the board for the proclamation and urging continued community support for recovery services.
Both proclamations were adopted on the record and signed as read into the minutes. The announcements are ceremonial declarations intended to raise awareness and encourage community participation in the listed events and support services.
