Okeechobee County to fund sheriff vehicle and equipment debt to cut interest costs

The Board of County Commissioners approved a funding agreement to help the Sheriff pay down commercial debt used to finance vehicles and capital equipment.
County staff presented the agreement prepared by the county attorney nd said the contribution would be "not more than $1,397,877.64"; the Sheriff is contributing $467,882 toward the same property schedule. Staff estimated the county and sheriff would save about $97,000 per year in interest payments by retiring the higher-cost commercial debt.
The requested action included an amendment to the fiscal-year 2026 budget and a budget transfer from the Landfill Trust Reserve Fund to the Sheriff's office. Commissioners discussed the long-term value of the debt payoff and, after staff answered technical budget questions, the board approved the funding and associated budget amendments by unanimous vote.
County staff and commissioners framed the action as a taxpayer-savings measure: the county will use reserve funds to eliminate higher-interest debt, lowering future annual debt service costs. The board directed finance staff and the county attorney to process the necessary budget transfers and execute the funding agreement.
